Winning Back our Sovereignty

June 4, 2019

The by-election in Peterborough, to be held this Thursday, is an important milestone. It is the first time since the referendum that a dedicated pro-Brexit party is fighting seriously to win a parliamentary seat.

This is important because it shows that people are finally waking up to the fact that Britain can only leave the EU by electing committed anti-EU MPs. The great fallacy of the referendum was the notion that we could simply have a vote and then entrust an overwhelmingly pro-EU parliament to honour the result.

The last three years show just why that doesn't work. Britain will never leave the EU under the Conservative or Labour parties. Until they are removed from power at our national parliament, there is nothing our own Brexiteer MEPs in Brussels can do influence the Brexit negotiations.

Winning parliamentary seats is the only game in town.  We said that all along, and that there was a good reason why a Conservative, pro-EU government launched the referendum to begin with. By pawning off the issue to a referendum, they divorced the matter from a General Election and ensured they would not lose seats over it. And, of course, that they would remain in charge regardless of the result.

The idea of entrusting the Brexit process to a pro-EU parliament and then negotiating on Brussels' terms through its Article 50 process was always fundamentally flawed.

That's why we ignore the "will they, won't they" circus with the Conservative government and Brexit. We maintain that the only way to leave the EU is to elect a party committed to doing so with a direct parliamentary mandate to immediately repeal the European Communities Act 1972. A surge for the Brexit Party in Peterborough this Thursday will be strong evidence that more and more people are waking up to this fact.
